In my NYC parochial grade school there were a couple of kids named Jesus. The nuns had to tell us that we did not have to bow our heads when we said their name in "English", the nuns also would tell us to use the "Hey Zeus" sound instead.

Actually they used a rounded pointer, about three feet long. With your palms up they would snap it across the tips of your fingers, yeah it hurt !

Damn! That doesn't sound pleasant. I was just telling guys at work the other day how in public school in OH back in my time they'd give you whacks on the behind w/ a big wooden paddle. You guys know what i'm talking about. 2 feet long, 3/5" thick, 4" wide. Several times & hard. Light your ass up! Hell, I even got whacks one time in 10th. or 11th. grade. It was that or they called my parents. Better than an ass whipping. Ah the good 'ol days.
