This was a gift from the same friend who has the antique shop--received it in partial trade for some deal or other and eventually passed it on to me, knowing I like this sort of thing.
This is a civil war/reconstruction era personal tool/weapon. It is a handmade (oak? hickory?) handle attached to a bayonet which was broken at one time and reforged (it's an old repair). Provenance unknown. Handle has dried and shrunk somewhat over the intervening years and fits loosely now. I wish my friend had asked more about the specific story that goes with this, but I guess at the time it was not his main concern; oh well. If this thing could talk--
